Seeds of Hope
Harley has a long-standing tradition of social justice, and that sense of equity is in the very food Harley eats. Food Security is a priority at Harley. Students, under the guidance of teacher Chris Hartman and Food Services Director Vicki Pasternak, plant and harvest organic produce through the Harley Micro Farm. In addition, they are part of the oversight committee that ensures the humane raising and processing of meat by Harley vendors. Indeed, Harley’s Micro Farm provides the lion’s share of organic vegetables served at the Harley Dining Hall. From these initiatives, Harley has expanded its outreach to South Africa, where students helped plant gardens in schools and the community in and around Richard’s Bay.
